![]() The Torrey pine is the rarest native pine tree in the Americas, growing only near Torrey Pines State Reserve in San Diego County, California, and on Santa Rosa Island. A survivor from the Ice Age, it was named in 1850 for Dr. John Torrey, a leading botanist of the time. Growing on rugged coastal bluffs, with little rainfall and poor soil, it is sculpted by stiff, salt-laden ocean breezes. A Torrey pine can live 150 years and grow to 60 feet in height.
