Week #2! Thanks to all who have contributed ( over $1000 to date ) for "Tuesday July 23rd thru Wednesday August 21st" - It's a great opportunity to assist in matching $5000 in GRANT FUNDS for Tile Heritage - principally for the Archiving Project and including the restoration and conservation of valuable historic books recently donated to the Tile Heritage Library!
(THF student intern Emery Joy managing the newly received book and periodical collection.)
THE STORY !
The Foundation recently received a collection of more than 50 historic California Faience tiles, historic and contemporary books on art pottery and tiles (approx 200) as well as many periodicals. They came to Tile Heritage from the estate of the late Dr. Kirby W. Brown, author, historian, researcher and grandson of one of the founders of California Faience.
California Faience, producer of art pottery and ornamental tiles, was located in Berkeley, California 1913-1959. Kirby’s grandfather, William Victor Bragdon, was one of the two founders of the company.
In 2015 in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name - the culmination of many years of collecting and research - Dr. Brown published a history: California Faience, Ceramics for Cottages and Castles.
Dr. Brown’s mother, Elizabeth “Bettie” Bragdon Brown had the foresight to preserve the records, photography, memorabilia and many books from the California Faience company. These records created the substance for Kirby’s research, and he preserved it all.
Our sincere thanks to all who contribute to and support the ongoing work of the Tile
Heritage Foundation. All contributors will be acknowledged on the THF Supporters web page.

Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo Stands Tall in Long Beach, California
Dedication and patience are the keys to preservation, and our congratulatory salute is extended to Long Beach Heritage and the Port Authority of Long Beach whose negotiations achieved what appeared several years ago to be a pipe dream, namely the careful removal, tile by tile, of the magnificent, historically important mural that had adorned the Port Authority Administration Building for nearly 60 years. The building itself had been scheduled for imminent demolition.
Brian Worley Art & Restoration of Claremont, California tackled the job. Work commenced on September 26, 2018 with the careful marking of every tile, numbering each row and lettering each column consecutively, before the tiles were removed column by column.
