Northern California Fires . . .Tile Heritage Foundation Library, Archives and Collections are SAFE! It has been a harrowing 10+ days. Most mandatory and advisory evacuations have been lifted. We feel very fortunate that the winds have stayed calm since around October 9th – allowing the ‘First Responders’ on the ground and in the air to have a broader opportunity to manage all the wildfires. It is emotionally and physically draining to be vigilant for long periods of time.

We are also HAPPY to announce that since 5pm yesterday, Thursday 19th, our whole area received some much appreciated rain… it was light but steady for a few hours last evening, dampening down the very dry landscape of the northern counties – this added a huge assist to managing the still burning fires in our area. We are very grateful to everyone working to keep us safe. The fires are not yet extinguished but the % under control has grown significantly.

Winds are still light - an additional blessing … we will sleep more soundly this weekend here in the north counties… we also know that it is increasingly dry and windy in Southern California – a high alert remains in place in the south.

Thank you for all of your connection and support … these have been very wild times this past 10 days.

Sheila & Joe

Tile Heritage Foundation 30th Anniversary Gala and Silent Auction at the Mercer Museum & the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works Tile Festival Weekend!

A SHOUT OUT & THANK YOU! . . . to all who were able to attend the Tile Heritage Foundation 30th Anniversary Gala on Friday, May 19th in Doylestown, PA. It was a delightful party co-hosted by Tile Heritage Foundation, Bucks County Historical Society and Moravian Pottery and Tile Works.

We are most appreciative of the SUPPORT for this event that we received from
Merola Tile/Somer Tile, Peter Mullins Stone Zone, Joseph Lundgren Consulting, Heritage Tile, Clay Squared to Infinity, Pat & Jim Evanko, Bantam Tileworks, Rolanda Port, and an 'Anonymous Patron.'

We are equally appreciative of the assistance of the THF 30th Gala committee: Katia McGuirk, Eric Boynton, Vance Koehler, Laura Robinson and Irene de Watteville. Working together, we created a memorable weekend!

THF-Award-201post
The Foundation used the Gala as a platform to present the Tile Heritage Award. Beginning in 1993 the board of directors of Tile Heritage wished to acknowledge those individuals who embodied the Tile Heritage mission in some exemplary way: promoting an awareness and appreciation of ceramic surfaces in the United States. The award is always a tile designed by a tile maker whose spirit and aesthetic related significantly to the award recipient.

The fourteenth Tile Heritage Award was presented to Cleota Reed, the author of the book, Henry Chapman Mercer and the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works. Mandy Baker of Whispering Hill Studio, who was Head Ceramist at the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works when Cleota was engaged in the research for her book, produced the Award Tile.

Cleota’s scholarship and her devotion to tiles as a decorative medium has served as an inspiration to hundreds of others who have come to Doylestown and become transfixed by Mercer himself, the legend, and his uniquely fabulous designs and installations. These tiles continue to inspire generations of tile makers throughout the United States and beyond, those who work the earth with their hands and create beautiful things to enrich the lives of others.

A remarkable fundraising weekend resulted for Tile Heritage due especially to the artisans who generously donated tiles, platters and *planters for the silent auctions and festival sale. Artisans’ contributions represent strong advocacy for Tile Heritage, and their generosity is what made the
anniversary weekend a great success.
